My old housemate always gives up chocolate for Lent too (despite being totally non religious). She always appreciates pigging out on Easter Eggs that much more that way you see.

Interesting that they all (well, the ones I can read, anyway) seem to be about the fast or the forty days, not the "lengthening" the Anglo-Saxons were so happy about :)

The Irish and Welsh words have the same origin as the Romance (i.e. Latin Quadragessima) and the Korean and Chinese translate respectively to "four ten-day fast" and "great fast period". (Oddly, "four ten-day feast" seems to be more common in contemporary Korean.)

No, son de anis, pero solo un poco. Ruben me dijo que él no entiende por qué los buñuelos son caros. Los ingredientes y metodo para preparalos no es especial.

Más sobre la Cuaresma

From: [identity profile] ursine1.livejournal.com
Neither Ruben nor I are practicantes. We discussed la cuaresma before eating the buñuelos on Friday. He told me that this type are traditionally eaten only on Wednesday and Thursday of this past week. The buñuelos de bacalao are eaten similarly the Wednesday and Thursday of semana santa as the practicantes are supposed to avoid meat those days. I plan to go to my favorite restaurant, El Rodizio (Brazilian-style barbeque), during those two days because their number of customers might drop. I say "might" because the reality is that are not that many practicantes these days.

I like "Fastenzeit" and "vastentijd" for "Lent".

Do you know what you'll eat to break the fast on Easter?

If I'd do lent, I'd be more likely to use "während der Fastenzeit" and "verzichten": "Während der Fastenzeit verzichte ich auf Süßigkeiten". "Aufgeben" normally signals a final intention - you don't only stop eating sweets for a time, you intend to never eat them again for the rest of your life.

Of course, you can always apply the logic of this old joke: "Warum sagen alle, dass es so schwer ist, das Rauchen aufzugeben? Ich hab das schon hundert Mal geschafft!" ;-)
