Tidbits

  • The other day I learned that the way I've always said août (namely [au]) is completely wrong for Standard French (where it is [u], more rarely [ut]), but usual for Louisiana French. You see, when it comes to Cajun French, I'm a natural!
  • All day I've been trying to remember the lyrics to the German version of "I Touch Myself" I used to sing to myself all the time a year ago. It's maddening! I can't even remember the first line.

I've never KNOWN how to pronounce that word. How have YOU been pronouncing it?

Hehehe, I didn't know there was a German version of "I Touch Myself." I tried to sign the song for my ASL class in college and my instructor told me it was inappropriate.

Like I said, I say [au].

I don't know if anyone's recorded a German version of "I Touch Myself". I made up my own and apparently didn't write it down anywhere. I recall I shifted the meanings around a bit in order to make it rhyme, but I can't remember what I went with.

Sorry, I missed that initially, somehow. Anytime I THINK I get French orthography something like this pops up. :: laugh ::

Well you can always try to REtranslate it. And then post it here. ^_-

I know! Isn't it fun? I just learned that but often has a final [t] as well. (In LF it doesn't, but bout does--and is feminine to boot!)

ut and fet (au fait) drive me mad - why do they get terminal consonants?

I'm convinced that my French is getting worse, not better. OTOH my daughter is introducing me to all the French nursery songs. They are completely different in spirit from anything I've heard before.

Sure they aren't just Yelle songs?

more rarely [ut]

Interesting - I had learned the pronunciation with the [t].

(And I don't know whether I've talked about goals in French; the only context I have for the word is Francophones yelling [byt! byt!] when their team scores a goal. So I'm not sure whether the [t] is specific to this context or would commonly be pronounced even in running speach, e.g. when talking about your goals for next year.)

I've been told that it's general for some speakers and not for others.

Those are always the best for language learners.

"So how do I pronounce it! Is it stylistically marked? Contextually-determined? WHAT ARE THE RULES DAMMIT?!"
