Uebrigens traf ich mich am Sonntag mit dem alten Klassenkamerad. Bedauerlicherweise, erfuhr ich nicht wieviel auf dem Fahrpass war. Ich hab ihn mehrmals gefragt, aber die Antwort hat er immer nur gemurmelt und ich hab sie nie verstanden. Immerhin hat er mich zu einem Bier eingeladen und seiner Verlobten vorgestellt, so wahrscheinlich will er, dass wir uns mal wiedersehen.

Ich berichte mehr vom Treffen später. (Blöde Studenten!)

Das darf ich nicht, da sie eine Arbeitskraft ist, die ich unbedingt nötig habe. Hoffentlich gibt es während meiner Rezeptionsschicht eine Gelegenheit, die Geschichte fortzusetzen.

The frightening thing is that this actually sort of works, given the context of muckefuck's previous posts. At least, I take it that it means that he met the old classmate he gave the mystery transit card to, that he wasn't able to clearly find out how much had been on the pass, but that they probably plan to get together for a beer later. (Admittedly, I'm not sure if "presented to its engaged one" means that he met/will meet his friend's fiancee or something else.) It isn't the Universal Translator, but it certainly lets me glean more information than the eldritch and arcane words of the original post, suited only to scholars (and a few tens of millions of people in some country or three across the sea.)

On the other hand, this one produces a Babelfish translation that contains the phrase "prescription ion layer". (Granted, I'd give a lot to be able to write a story in which that phrase would make sense.)

Tee hee! I was planning on switching to English for the benefit of all, but Babelfish makes my comments far more interesting than they are in the original!

Babelfish's German version of that: "T-Stück hee! Auf mir plante das Schalten zu Englisch zugunsten aller, aber Babelfish Marken meine Anmerkungen weit interessanter, als sie in der Vorlage sind!"

And back into English: "T-fitting hee! On me switching planned my notes to English in favor of all, but Babelfish marks far more interesting, than they are in the collecting main!"

I love doing that. Babelfish weirds language.

I tried the two traditional machine translation examples for forward-and-back translation. Since Babelfish does Russian to English but not vice versa, I chose Korean.¹

For "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." I got:

"The spirit puts out the flag and does, the flesh omits but."

For "Out of sight, out of mind.":

"Oblivion of mind, at outside."

I particularly like the second one, which sounds sort of like a description of Nirvana.

¹I was briefly tempted to phrase that as "Korean was chosen", but decided that the .001% of people who would get the joke would realize that it wasn't very funny. :-)
