  • Goodbye Hello Sushi! We were excited to finally have a sushi spot around the corner until I popped in and discovered that it was really stealth Thai. (Not even bothering to hide it, either: There's a portrait of Bhumibol Adulyadej Maharaja in plain sight.) The sushi was barely passable, but I thought the Thai entrees might be more decent. So when I didn't feel like cooking the night Everyday Thai was closed, I ordered from them. Low points: gummy lad na, more peanut butter than pepper paste in the Penang, and beef salad made with pre-cooked beef. Ugh!
  • Seafood feast I knew I was in for a treat at JK Sweets yesterday when I asked Jay for help choosing an entree and he advised me to get something not to heavy. In fact, he warned me that there were so many side dishes today he was giving me a reduced portion of bibimbap! Even so, I barely finished it all. There was:
    • chapchae
    • wakame soup with beef
    • sautéed shrimp
    • batter-fried whitefish, beef, and scallops
The shrimp was especially nice: good texture, good flavour, attractive arrangement. Least successful was the soup, which was pungent even for Korean food.
  • Mojo Piña At [livejournal.com profile] monshu's suggestion, I doused the pork chops in a mix of fruit juices--orange, pineapple, and lime--and crushed garlic before leaving for work. When I got home, I stuck the meat under the broiler and reduced the marinade to a glaze. Tedious, but worth it! The standout side, however, was grilled purple asparagus, a farmers market find from our best gal pals. Lemon thyme complements it well, and miraculously it didn't make my urine all stinky!
