monshu and I met at Sam's Wines and Spirits after work and, as predicted, I went a little overboard. "Have you ever spent less than $100 there?" he asked. "Not in living memory." I had the excuse that I was buying gifts, but somehow I ended up with more gifts than giftees. Most years, I dither until the last minute over what to buy and then fret up until the last second; this year I went ahead and bought what was good enough when I saw it, telling myself I could always upgrade later. Trouble is, when you see something better, what do you do with the old stuff?
Afterwards, we got dinner at Mixteco Grill, which I rightly predicted would be less of a madhouse midweek in bad weather. The good news is that we were seated almost immediately. The bad news is that a flimsy curtain behind my seat is all that there was between me and an unheated room. The good news is that that room is soon to be additional dining space, meaning that next time I could be in for both promptness and comfort. We started off with some tamales in sweet poblano cream sauce that were to die for--so what if my pescado en mojo de lujo wasn't the belt out of the park that their cochonita pibil was last time? It came with rice only, so I told the waiter, "I need some moros for my cristianos." That earned me a blank stare from him, and a shake of the head frommonshu.
At dinner I gave him his first holiday gift: A CD of liturgical music from Arvo Pärt, which includes his incredible settings of the O Antiphons. These are real old-school pieces, traditionally played during the week preceding Christmas Eve Day; I don't recall them from my Catholic youth, butmonshu does and he adores Pärt, so it was impossible not to buy them for him.
I actually stumbled across them by accident on YouTube and was blown away by "O Immanuel", the text of which is associated with the 23rd of December. It's music so beautiful, it's actually causes me pain to listen to it. Although Estonian, Pärt converted to Orthodoxy and clearly draws heavily from that tradition of a cappella choral singing, but there's an unmistakable modern stamp to his compositions. One of the advantages to having our media room in the basement is that we can play his pieces as loud as we want, if not as loud as they deserve to be; his "De Profundis" shook the room, but I imagine in an actual church performance the incredible bass would even pulverisedanbearnyc's kidney stones.
The last notes of that were fading when my sister called to talk Christmas week plans with me. We batted some menu ideas back and forth, and I announced my willingness to help out my mother with her last-minute shopping. Sis confessed that, even though she'd officially finished up weeks ago, she'd been compelled to make another purchase by her eldest's sudden interest in zoo toys. "He came in the other day and said, 'I added some things to my Amazon wish list!' I looked, and they were all Playmobil zoo things....Then he started adding things to his brother's wish list." I told her, "You've created a monster!" At least our inventories of adolescent greed had to be written out longhand.

- Hindi has a number of compound postpositions which require a simple postposition, usually का kaa "of", to intervene between the object and the governing word. लिए is in origin an oblique form of लिया liyaa, the past participle of लेना lena "take".
- तय tay also looks like a Hindi past participle to me, but one of my sources labels it "Arabic". I think the etymon may be طی ṭai which Platts glosses as "folding".
- By itself, this isn't a complete sentence, since it lacks a recognisable verb. तय normally appears with a "light verb" such as होता hotaa "be" (when intransitive, e.g. यह बात तय है "This matter is settled") and करना karnaa "do" (when transitive, e.g. इस बार यही तय किया है "This I have decided this time").
