• Someone asked me today for the meaning of Launegeld. My first guess was what monshu calls "mad money", i.e. a portion of funds you set aside to spend on a whim, without considering practicalities. That's what my Thuringian coworker thought, too. But it turns out this is a variant of launegild, a Lombardic legal term for a "compulsory countergift", without which a gift was considered invalid and could be revoked. (The first element is cognate with Standard German Lohn "renumeration".)
• Someone asked me the other day if I knew where to find libros de cuentas cortas. I said I didn't know if any existed, but I did own some libros de cuentos cortos. (A cuento corto in Spanish is a "short story", whereas cuentas are accounts, as in what a contador público [CPA] would deal with.) The kicker is that he claims native-like fluency in Spanish.

Careful! One half is Gandhi Marg, one half is Mohammad Ali Jinnah Way. I don't get over there as often as I'd like, but I'm working on changing that.
