Catastrophic bowel failure
A correction to my last entry: Nuphy was supposed to be subsisting on broth. Turns out he was subsisting on water--and not much of that. I arrived home today to find a request from his daughter to look after him. I put away the groceries and started boiling water for dinner, but then I got a call from Monshu who said Nuphy had called him looking for me and sounded really, really bad. I called him myself (on a borrowed phone, but that's another story) and, sure enough, he sounded terrible. So much so that I immediately hopped a cab to his place.
Less than an hour later, we checked him into the ER. About an hour after that, they got their heads partly out of their asses and figured out how they were going to admit him. While we waited around for a room assignment, two different nurses tried to start an IV and failed. After another hour, we finally had a room but it was until 1:30 that the goddamn doctor finally showed to give him a central line and almost another hour after that that the nurse finally hooked up his IV. Six hours after arrival! Jesus, i can tell you where I'm not going if I have a medical emergency.
He's doing much better now. The diagnosis was ileus and an enema seems to have jumpstarted things again. He seems to think he'll be coming home tomorrow; I think that depends on whether he can actually take anything by mouth then. I'm at his place now and I think I'm just about to...
