monshu returned bearing gifts. His timing was perfect: I had literally just slid the DVD back into its NetFlix sleeve when I heard the door chime. It was a surgical strike of a business trip, but he did have a couple hours free to visit the Asia Society at 70th and Park Avenue and came back bearing paperbacks. He must've remembered that I was reading Ha Jin. In fact, it just Tuesday night that I finished off The bridgegroom. (I started reading it several years ago--back when I still lived in Uptown--and had to reread almost all the stories, I'd forgotten so much of them.) It cheered me so to clear one more title from the To Read shelf, and its place has already been filled!
The other was a Tash Aw novel set during the time of Sukarno. "I thought with your current obsession it would be good for you."
"Dude, I'm over Indonesia now. For the last two weeks or so I've been doing Turkey." (When Ha Jin left my satchel, Orhan Pamuk went in.)
He exhaled resignation. "I can't keep track. Oh well, you'll have it for the next time."
He knows me so well!
