Phone trouble

I am a total spazz--I must've wasted twenty minutes this morning searching for my cell phone. It occurred to me once or twice yesterday that I hadn't seen it since the night previous, but it wasn't until I was actively looking for it this morning that I realised it wasn't in any of the places I normally leave it. Or any of the places I abnormally leave. Or any of the places I never leave it under any circumstances.
I tried calling the number and it sent me straight to voicemail--not surprising that the battery would be dead. At that point, panic set in as I instantaneously reviewed the phone numbers I had no place else and tallied up those that were essentially irreplaceable.[*] That sent me scurrying around once more to check all the likely, unlikely, and not-at-all likely locations. I resigned myself to calling Touché tonight on the off-off chance that someone had found it on the floor there and turned it in (and that I would want to touch it again if someone had).
I kept trying to recall if I'd taken it out of my jacket after getting home in the wee hours but couldn't decide if I was prompting myself to manufacture a false and plausible memory. Finally, I brought up a genuine memory of checking my phone in the Clark-Devon Hardware parking lot just after leaving the bar. Could I have stuffed it in my pants pocket after that rather than returning it to the jacket? I could've and did.
[*] With this in mind, is there any way to back up a SIM card?
