"Make me something yummy with apricot brandy," was [livejournal.com profile] monshu's request. So I dipped into my cocktail bible and came up with this:
Arctic Summer

1½ parts gin [Bombay Sapphire]
¾ part apricot brandy [Rothmann & Winter]
¼ part grenadine
4 parts bitter lemon [Schweppes]

Fill a highball glass with cracked ice. Add the ingredients one-by-one without stirring.

Bitter lemon used to be a special treat for me, one I could basically obtain only on certain non-budget airline flights. But then it unexpectedly appeared at the local market in bottles bearing Cyrillic script and the GWO stocked up big. Unfortunately, the bottles are rather oddly shaped, so we can't really keep on chilling in the fridge.

[livejournal.com profile] monshu found this a very refreshing drink--at first. But the grenadine tends to settle, so the last few fingers ended up too sweet for his taste. I suppose stirring it or adding the grenadine after the soda would solve that, but then you'd lose the lovely pink sunset effect. I found a cousin of this called the Red Cloud which replaces the lemon soda with ½ part lemon juice and a dash of bitters and is served shaken and strained. We may have to resort to that when the bitter lemon finally runs out.

Don't know if this is where you get yours, but I discovered not too long after we moved here that World Fresh Market on Devon and Artesian carries bitter lemon. It's one of my favorite sodas, so I occasionally make a trip out there to pick up a few bottles.

No, our local market is Devon Market at Devon and Greenview. Thanks for the tip--if it disappears from there, I'll still know where to find it. (Other than the outrageously expensive Fevertree brand at In Fine Spirits on Clark.)

A thing to consider, instead of grenadine, perhaps pomegranate juice, which is sweet but its what grenadine IIRC was made from originally. The juice is a red-brown, but its slightly heavy and thus you might get the sunset effect.

As long as you decant into a sterilized glass container, you can re-cant (which I'm sure is not a word) into a more standard sized bottle, and use the champagne cork preserver, if it's fizzy bitter lemon. If it's still, a regular old decanter works just fine. And if you have a WEE fridge (or are travelling to a party), glass jars look just fine. Although party guests are apt to ask if you have moonshine in those glasses. Gwyn
