Moving gaper block

I have a new pet peeve. Ironically, it's almost a complete reversal of a previous one, which is my ongoing annoyance at people who don't accommodate others on the sidewalk. It's almost never intentional rudeness, rather the unintentional sort which results from blissful obliviousness. Well, now I'm running into situations where people clear the sidewalk at my approach. I don't mean they move to one side, I mean they move right off of it and into the grass. I'm not sure what signal they think they're sending, but what I hear is "You are so much of a spaz on those things I'd better give you a wide berth." And since I start with an ingrained dislike of those who don't accommodate others, it makes me very self-conscious.
Today's incident topped even that. Not only did the old guy out this morning move himself and the dog he was walking onto someone's lawn, but he just stood there and watched me go by. As if, what, I was going to suddenly veer into the grass? So I said cordially as I passed, "I don't take up that much room." He chuckled and said, "They're auditioning for Tiny Tim at the Goodman!" What do you say to that? (I mean, after you've just decked the guy with your crutch, of course.)
