There will be prizes for placing this one:
It is not hard to live through a day, if you can live through a moment. What creates despair is the imagination, which pretends their is a future, and insists on predicting millions of moments, thousands of days, and so drains you that you cannot live the moment at hand.

I assume you mean "without Google", so I won't post the answer, since there's no way I'd have gotten it without it. (My ignorance is such that the author's name didn't ring a bell even after I'd seen it.) But I thought it was interesting that your journal is currently the top hit for a phrase search. Links naming the author come next (and most of those hits don't specify the source, though of course Google Books does).

Seconded on the ignorance count. Having now read the author's Wikipedia bio, I think I need to add some books to the never-ending reading list.

It's okay, [livejournal.com profile] lhn; everyone knows that without the no-Google rule, it would be you every time. (Barring, say, an inopportune EMP in downtown Chicago.)

Imagine how surprised I was to find this journal is the third Ghit for "muckefuck", subordinate only to the Wiktionary and Wikipedia entries. Given that, it seems to me I should have a lot more strangers stumbling through and leaving comments.

Looking at Google Trends, searches for "muckefuck" appear be pretty infrequent most of the time, with short, huge jumps at intervals ranging from months to more than a year. Unfortunately, it doesn't give an absolute scale, but with mean traffic at 1, it spends nearly all its time at or near zero, with rare peaks at 20-60 times that much. Most of the traffic is from German-speaking countries, as you'd expect, with the US at a distant #4. (I wonder if there's any way to look at LJ traffic, to see if you get more hits/new commenters around those peaks.)

The first and about the only time I heard that word was during my Zivildienst in a hospital. It was my task to supply the patients with coffee in the afternoon, and assist some of them in drinking it. Of course we offered decaf besides the regular coffee, and some patients were only allowed the former. But then there was this old confused lady in her 80s or 90s who one time refused to drink her (caffeinated) beverage, saying that she didn't want the Muckefuck we served her. I looked the word up that evening.

Yeah, but there are also cafés, a skateboard line, and a band named "Muckefuck". I would expect any of those to generate more links than this silly old journal.

They probably don't update that often.

I'll post the answer later once one or two others have had a chance to guess.

Let me tag on to the not without google train here. And what is it with you and gimp references? Was Pulp Fiction a formative moment?

Every since I was young, you couldn't show up at school with a limp without being called "gimpy" for the day. [livejournal.com profile] monshu was already calling me that on Sunday.

(Also, it's a clue about the author--even though when he wrote the passage in question he was still ungimped.)

I lived in a space with doors to a storage space off the main room, something akin to the 7 1/2th floor in Being John Malkovich. Visitors would remark that this was where I was stashing my gimp. I would vouch for my gimp's impeccable filing skills and so the legend was born.

I did google, I'm familiar with the name from my days of managing a literature section at a book store - but I like the others have not had a chance to read his work.

I didn't google (nor did I on Herr Kafka) - my guess here is Simone Weil. (That would be my guess - even with your hint of 'he'.)
