Controlled bleeding
Yesterday I was scratching my right eyebrow and felt a tiny bump. Without investigating further, I flicked it away with a fingernail. It hurt just a little, so I figured I'd popped an old zit. But a moment latter the spot was feeling very...moist. I touched it and my fingers came back covered in blood, so I hustled to the restroom, fortunate that no co-workers were about. The second time I applied direct pressure, it finally stopped oozing and I was able to clean up. I thought I'd been clever about not getting blood on anything, but then I spotted a big splotch on my slacks. It rinsed out surprisingly well with cold water and the remnants came out in the wash last night.
I should've remembered just what a mess a small wound on the face can cause. Over twenty years ago, I got a cut in almost exactly the same spot when Eric Hoffman threw a rock at me on the playground. I ran home, blood streaming everywhere, and find my mom. When she'd cleaned it all up and showed me the wound in the mirror, I was amazed by how small it was relative to what came out of it.
