This morning could not have been more gorgeous as I strolled down towards the Lake to meet a friend for coffee. He was out, but his housemates were, to a man, extremely hospitable and encouraged me to wait around for him. Instead, I left him a message and tramped off to the shore where I found a big pile of rocks to sit on. Reclining there with the sun beating down on my skin, a stiff cool breeze in my hair, and the sound of surf filling my ears was heaven on earth. Just as I was realising I needed to move into the shade before I became Raccoon Man, a lifeguard showed up to politely shoo me away.

As luck would have it, it right about then that my friend got back from his jog and gave me a ring. I met him in the courtyard, waited while he showered, and then we went out to sit in a local park. I would've loved to have taken him further, but he had less than an hour before he had to depart for a celebration in Libertyville. So after bidding him goodbye, I made my own way down the lakefront park toward Little Saigon. Out behind [livejournal.com profile] monshu's old building, I was surprised to find a community garden had sprung up. One of the women tending her little raised plot of herbs and veggies told me they'd only just installed it. I told her how much it reminded me of the little Schrebergärtle I first saw when I came to Germany, gave her some advice on keeping pests away, and continued my jaunt.

By now it was starting to cloud up a bit. I cut in at Carmen in order to admire the beds by my old apartment. Just as I passed my beneath it, I ran into one of the part-time workmen. He recognised me immediately, we chatted, and he invited me in to view the courtyard. It's looking pretty good, though we agreed palms were not a good choice for flanking the fountain. I wished him well and headed down to Argyle, where I stopped into Phở 888 for what is still my favourite Vietnamese iced coffee and then into the new Tiền Giang on Broadway for my pork chop and eggs over rice.

Now it was looking like it would rain any moment, and I ducked into Tai Nam just as the first fat drops were starting to fall. In the time it took me to pick up four items (though locating the chénpí did take an inordinate amount of time), the cloudburst spent itself; I exited to sunny skies and tremendous puddles, caught the Broadway bus, and made it home to the Old Man in short order.
