Livejournal is now an interesting but sedate dinner party, rather than a burbling cocktail party, but Facebook is traders shouting on the trading room floor. Possibly 15-year-olds passing notes in math class.
I kind of wonder what to expect of LJ going foward in light of things like facebook.
Personally, I like it a lot better. Many of my friends are here posting interesting thoughts rather than twittering what they are doing every second of every day.
But, the fact that it *is* small and there is no clear way for everyone I ever knew to find me here is part of the appeal.
That's exactly why I see them as complementary: Facebook to have everyone in one place, handy for such things as updating people on my whereabouts ("Gonna go to thing at Brian's tonight, hope to see everyone there!") and for posting short updates I don't mind being seen by absolutely everyone. LJ for longer posts, particularly ones on ticklish subjects where the false sense of semi-anonymity makes me more candid.
After considerable thought, it is: everyone you've ever known, and everyone THEY know, yelling at each other across a train platform, while the overhead screens play advertising at top volume. On the last shopping day before xmas, in New York, during a blackout.

That sounds like Twitter, except all the 15 year-olds are 30 year-olds making up for lost time.

And yet, I check it! Maybe twice a month, but still, I do.

Facebook scares me.
