Some of you have no doubt noticed that lately I've had more trouble coming up with WotD posts than aadroma has had coming up with Multilingual Mondays. The trick is to come up with something interesting enough to post but not so slangy or obscure that I'll have to spend all day trying to find equivalents. I would especially like to include more common colloquial expressions, but these are often the hardest to track down.

I also have a rule that if I already know equivalents in at least four of the languages involved then I don't bother. Earlier in the week, I thought I'd hit upon a great candidate with "breaded", but after I chewed on it a bit, I realised that I could remember not only Spanish empanado but also German paniert. Since this is obviously a French borrowing, it gives me French pané and Dutch paneerd with little extra effort, just as the Spanish allows me to guess Catalan empanat. There we go, five out of ten, no reason to go hunting down Irish aránaithe or Chinese 裹面包屑的 or what have you. Or is this a case where something is already better than nothing, even if it's more review and revelation?

Of course us sneaky Dutch speakers had to add a 'ge-' at the start of that, just to throw of the multilingual students. The verb is paneren, but breaded is gepaneerd.
