hantsbear wrote "I feel a bit like I'm sleepwalking through life at the moment," and I readily agreed with him. It's not an unpleasant sensation--rather something of a relief after some of the tumult of the last year or two--but at this stage of my life the feeling of being passively carried along by routine and conditioned responses that doesn't sit well with me. In fact, it brings to mind Thoreau's remark about "quiet desperation". For weeks now I've been trying to think of some way to counteract my essentially reactive tendencies and engage more vigorously with my environment, to broaden my painfully narrow conceptual horizons and commit to a fuller, more dynamic existence.
