Notes: theunixgeek recently asked where I get the ideas for these posts. I suspect he'll be able to identify the source of this one! At first, I questioned whether it was worth doing, but (a) I couldn't think of the German and (b) the Romance forms were more divergent than I would've expected, so in the end I'm glad I did.

Hopefully areia will drop by to opine about the connotations and usage of these words in Dutch. I was looking for the equivalent that would be used in a context like "Birds evolved from dinosaurs".

Definitely evolueren if you're talking about species evolving. I would translate ontwikkelen as 'develop', and use it for (most commonly) film developing, but also societies or systems changing over time. E.g. development aid provided to countries would be ontwikkelingshulp.

I'd understand "evolvieren", and Duden has it (as "bildungssprachlich"), so it seems to exist as a word in German but but I've never heard or read it.

"sich herausstellen" or simply "zu etwas werden" would work too, imo.

Das Substantiv Evolution ist auf jeden Fall gebräuchlicher als das Verb, aber auch das hört man gelegentlich. :)

Vielleicht will ich's nicht hören, weil ich's so grausig finde ;-)...

"Evolution" ist häufiger, ja, und meist im Zusammenhang von "evolution of the species".

Und wenn wir schon am Ausweiten sind, "involvieren" hört man immer häufiger, in allen möglichen Zusammenhängen. Es scheint praktischer zu sein als z.B. "beinhalten" (wo man ja meist bein-halten liest) oder neutraler als "sich einbringen" oder "sich engagieren".

Interestingly enough, "Evolucionar" is quite a common word now. For instance, "Mi Pokemon evolucionó rápidamente". Then, there's that gay joke (which comes from an old film from the 70s) "Los artitas evolucionan" (when someone changes his looks to something worse.
