New growth

The catalpas have been in bloom an entire week and I'm just now getting around to mentioning it. Late one night last week, as I was waiting for the bus back to the old place, oversized cardboard boxes clutched in my hands for the umpteenth time, my eyes feel on a somewhat scraggly specimen across the street and I wondered how long the creamy flowers had been in full sight yet outside of my awareness.

There's no missing them now. We have a beautiful example in full view of the sunroom but overhanging the neighbour's yard (the best of all arrangements, in other words). There was an even larger tree on our route home from Massouleh tonight. As we approached it, I could see that despite the still air, a blossom detached itself a couple times a minute or more to float gently down to the ground; I tried to catch one but failed.

Literally overnight--and on the eve of the solstice even--we went from chill and damp to hot and humid. Today [livejournal.com profile] monshu cracked and turned the AC on, which means the cat can stop retreating to the interiors of closets and go back to flopping down on the rugs and carpets where he's most comfortably underfoot. I made my first pitched of iced tea, though to my shame we had to use boughten mint rather than the fruits of our garden. Not that it isn't thriving, it's just we don't have critical mass for brewing up tea by the gallon rather than the mugful.

It's time to share your borage flower recipes, since I can see buds forming. I tried replanting some stalks and ended up killing half the clump in the process; at least I didn't get the parts about to bloom. The jasmine also looks like it's coiled for a growth spurt now that we finally have a semblance of tropicality outside. Everywhere, the legacy of the dampest June I can recall is lushness and greenery. And mulberries! Still white and unripe, but I've got my eye on the tree so I can strike before the birds do. Maybe that could be the fruit that initiates our Rumtopf?
