Is the Korean (or the first two syllables thereof, at least) onomatopoeic in origin? Something like 'ttag-ttag bird'?

Certainly looks that way. Martin lists 딱딱 as an onomatopoeia for "with repeated bangs (crashes, cracks, thuds, smashes)". It spawns a whole family of related sound-symbolic words including 딱다그르르 and 딱다글딱다글, either of which could be the basis for 딱따구리.
