So in case any of you are curious but haven't joined [livejournal.com profile] learn_hindi, I made my first post there today. Nothing complicated, just a simple question : "How long have you [formal] been learning Hindi?". My answer (in comments) is "Do-ek hafton se" or "A couple [lit. "two-one"] weeks", which I consider literally true even if I did try once before and have more background experience than that statement alone would imply.

After you've learned a bit, maybe you can confirm or deny what I've been told about Hindi: that it is accusative in the present tense and ergative in the past tense. Still trying to wrap my brain around that one.

I can confirm that right now: What you're talking about is so common that there's even a term for it: split ergativity. (The examples in the article beyond the link are even drawn from Hindi.)
