Chill winds

Finally, some fall weather! Recently,
monshu has decided that his doctor's prohibition on caffeine was a load of hooey and gone back to the real stuff in the morning. At the height of his misocaffeinism, he even gave up green tea! But to underlie the fact that it's back on the menu, he ordered some "superfine" Dragon Well from Ten Ren which we sipped on the porch last night as we polished off the last of the mooncake. We had to use the tetsubin because it seems all but two of the old man's Yixing pots went missing in the move. Oh well; thanks to the magic of eBay, more on the way!
The maples around us are showing no signs of changing, but I can't say the same for other trees in the hood. The locusts in particular are slipping into their showy stage, making me long to see what they're like by my old place. (It's been another ten days since I've set foot there; still no real nibbles on the renting front.) A few neighbours are displaying autumnal decorations, but no real Halloweenery yet. How about your 'hood?

OTOH, our next door neighbour, who celebrates every goddamn holiday with some kind of new door ornament, is firmly in pumpkins and corn stalks mode. I'm fine with that, except that my 6 year old is starting to notice whenever the ornamentation changes, and wants us to dress the house up for Halloween, too.
These are the joys of parenthood, of course: the community-building your kids drag you into. The thing is that for me, all this fuss over Halloween is a bit like being asked suddenly to adopt Holi and gleefully throw red paint all over everyone. Where I grew up we had the word and not much else.
AS YOU WELL KNOW....
There are sycamore trees along Market street that will loose their leaves and few maples that will colour in, but for the most part that's it. Summer blooming flowers just continue to bloom as do most plants.
I miss the fall as I remember it in Chicago. I loved that period between Hallowe'en and Old Calendar Christmas, but I hated the cold after that. I love decorating for the Holidays, baking the cookies, making mincemeat, Marshall Fields window displays, The cooking still gets done, but the other things are missing. I guess one might say that the seasons here are drab. I do miss the heat of a real summer, but not the cold of a real winter... hence the impending move to Tucson AZ.
Hallowe'en is a fairly big Holiday here. The Wiccan/Pagan community is large and has some political savvy, so the "religious celebrations are quite open. Of course costuming in "Sodom-by-the-Sea is right up front. Will you guys decorate your condo for the Holidays?

The trees around my house are dropping leaves that have dried up but not changed color yet. Lame!
