Ever so stealthily, our one-month anniversary in the new place crept by yesterday. I remembered in time to wish [livejournal.com profile] monshu a happy anniversary last night and he was completely taken aback (as was our neighbour, chatting with us on the porch at the time). Neither of them could believe the time had flown by so quickly. I'm the opposite; I feel so comfortable here now that I'm amazed how little time that's taken. The first couple weeks, I was spending at least half my nights in my old apartment. When I found I'd slept here four or five nights in a row, I made a special effort to extend it to a full week. Finally, last week, I had to go out of my way to spend even a single night at the MDA. (There was mail to pick up, plants to water, and so on.) And it was weird how much I missed [livejournal.com profile] monshu. When I told him the next day, he said, "It was sort of odd not having you here last night to talk to me." Can you believe that, before this year, the only time we'd ever spent this much time together was on vacation?

It'll still be another week and a half at least before we get the floors seen to. After my first sleep-starved weekend, I thought there'd be no way I could ever rest easy in a house this creaky, but the human body, it seems, will adjust to anything. That and the leakage problems are what's keeping us from moving the bulk of my things in. We didn't know how extensive repairs might have to be, and the fact that both levels might have to be involved encouraged us to keep as much packed up and out of the way as possible. But now it's looking like some simply masonry work might be all we need to keep water from invading our comfy home.

So on Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] bunj helped me rescue a few items so that I'd have more than a week's worth of clothes at my disposal. We also brought back my files, the most important reference works, and most of my liquor. (Good God do we look like lushes now!) As soon as we can get an ETA on fixing up the den and such, I'll look into hiring movers to get my furniture here. Ah, domesticity at last!
