What would it be like, I wonder, to work in a building that didn't loose power several times a year and flood after every good rain? It seems to have mostly dried out, though there is still a large puddle blocking the door downstairs. My coworker was remarking that it had "never looked so clean" down there because a thin layer of silt was deposited in Nilotic fashion concealing all flaws in the floor. Fortunately, we long ago learned not to file anything on the lowermost shelves so nothing of ours was damaged. But, really, what the hell? On the other hand, they're finally fixing the roof after thirty years of leaks, so I suppose there's always hope the basement will be next.

Watch me not be able to resist the temptation to wonder whether you live in the US rather than in Europe.

(Though I imagine we have power failures here, too; it just seems to me that I hear about them a lot less than I do from USonians.)

It really boggles me that a developed country can have these kinds of persistent infrastructure problems. At least we seem to have fewer problems than my relatives in St. Louis, which I think has less to do with the diligence of ComEd vs. Energen than with the simple fact that most of our power lines are buried up here whereas in St. Louis they're strung up where trees can fall on them. Could that be one of the big differences between US and European cities as well?
