Being neighbourly
In case Tuesday's portrait of my new neighbour with the meth head ex left you feeling sad, I'll tell you that he was in fine spirits when I ran into him on the train last night. It was his birthday, so he was doled up for a night on the town; I spotted him from across the car and he fairly bounded up to me--which was a touch awkward, as I was underslept and just getting home from an overlong day at work. Also, it was a full car and, even though I felt like giving him a congratulatory peck, I gave it a miss because I didn't fell up to having to deal with any possible bullshit. (Homophobia sucks, the internalised kind most of all.)

For a reasonable discussion of possible origins of the expression. But etymology is one thing, while popular interpretation is another, and the latter is probably more relevant to current subtextual (?) nuances. I guess I won't bother doing penance when the phrase slips out from time to time.

Here's another data point for you: One of my college classmates kept a week-long journal of homophobia that was printed in the school magazine. One of the incidents mentioned was overhearing another student say, "That sucks!" This prompted some of dormmates to ask me incredulously if I really thought that expression was anti-gay; clearly the possibility had never even occurred to them before.
