O MY Luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June:
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune!

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I:
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry:

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only Luve,
And fare thee weel a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it were ten thousand mile.

Huh. I just realized something: Mary Chapin Carpenter's "10000 Miles" is drawn, at least in part, from that poem. (She's done that before: "Grow Old With Me" echoes Browning's "Rabbi ben Ezra".)

Funny, the lyric it reminded me of was:
But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door
from fellow Scotsmen Charlie and Craig Reid.

And meant it from the bottom of his heart, each and every time!

I still remember singing an Americanized version of this in high school. I remember the bass line having "seeeeeas... ruuuuuuun... dryyyyyyyy!" and wanting the whole time to sing "gaaaaaang," but knowing it would screw everyone up.

Once I learned that the original form of that famous quote o' mice an' men ends with the words "gang aft agley", I couldn't imagine why anyone would say it any other way.
