The other night, we discovered that [livejournal.com profile] monshu's cable brings him two channels of constant Christmas carols. There's "Sounds of the Seasons", which is always there (FYI, apparently most seasons apart from Christmas are inobtrusively New-Agey) and one I've never seen in years past called "Traditional Christmas".

I'm having some difficulty telling what the difference is between the two. At first I thought it was just the relative ages of the people singing "I'll Be Home for Christmas", with the cardiganned-and-dead set predominating on the latter. The more I listened to Traditional Christmas, however, the more I became convinced that is was all Christmas songs written and/or sung by Jews. But then last night as I was leaving they were playing some boy band's rendition of "O Holy Night", which immediately shot to hell both hypotheses at once.

How do you know none of the boys were Jewish?

I get a "classical Christmas" station on my cable that, aside from playing the "Hallelujah" chorus from Messiah, is excellent.

(and "Christmas Shoes" free)

Do you not want Halleluja because it's for Easter rather than for Christmas, or have you just burned out on it?

I am unfamiliar with "Christmas Shoes", so I looked up the lyrics. Whoa!

I'd been wondering why there weren't any Christmas songs about charity other than Good King Winceslas -- or songs about syrupy maudlin charity that you find in Christmas stories. Now I've got an example.

I'm listening to a fragment on iTunes.

Scary!

I discovered Christmas Shoes while we were in Seattle over the weekend. Well, not exactly discovered it but we paid more attention to the lyrics. I told my mom "Listen, there's a story in this song!" Well, shit that was one of the most saddest Christmas songs I've ever heard.
