Awesome--I managed to sleep through the night for a change! Perhaps jet lag is finished with kicking my ass? I guess dragging myself into work yesterday (where there's no possibility of a midday nap) was the push needed to reset my internal clock. We'll find out if I have any appetite when lunchtime rolls around. It was a bizarre and novel experience yesterday to compel myself to munch down some crackers not because I was hungry but because it seemed like a bad idea to go more than eight hours without eating a thing.
It was mildly surprising how little changed in my absence; even my coworkers were saying it seemed more like one week since they'd seen me than three. One could call it depressing, but it was both good and bad. I'd resigned myself to missing the fall colours, but it seems they've only really kicked in in the past few days. There are a few bare trees around work--those maples and such which were changing well in advance of anything else back when the weather was still summertime-warm. But even now, there's more green than colour; only the rest of the sugar maples, the ashes, sweetgums, and buckeyes have really gone whole hog. Other trees, such as the oaks, catalpas, and ginkgos, are reluctantly yellowing and still others seem to be doing their best to ignore the entire change of seasons.
Even construction projects seem suspended. I didn't really expect there to be much change in the Howard Street Station, where progress continues to crawl at a Chicago public works pace, but even the massive condo building site at Thorndale barely seems to have gained a floor. There's a new external hut at the entrance to work where they'll soon(?) be demolishing the unreliable lift in order to construct an elevator, but otherwise everything looks exactly the same.
Work was, as I expected, a cakewalk, consisting mostly of checking e-mail and filling people in on my adventures. I brought in the kimchi chocolates to share, thus spreading confusion as to where I actually went (does this mean I have to bring Peking Duck candy back from our mooted Korea trip?); to my surprise, they were almost entirely consumed by day's end. Perhaps those mild-mannered information workers aren't as unadventurous as I've always assumed?
