Burned and freezing
I don't understand how Nuphy could keep assuring me that I hadn't gotten too sunburned standing for a couple hours in the noonday sun. I'm redder than a bloody Welsh rugby jersey. How was I supposed to know they'd move the heavy athletics to the middle of the field? I expected to sit on a bench in the shade; instead I squatted in the grass under the merciless glare of the late late summer sunshine. Woe is me!
Then, after sunset, the temperature dropped below 60 and even in my flannel I was shivering, but neither that nor the women RAISED BY WOLVES behind us was enough to drive me and Nuphy from the headline concert. So sad to see Petrillo half-emptied after the first act. Still an awfully good show, but no cakewalk for the performers.
In between these two extremes, I had a great deal of fun with
monshu,
bunj, Rubeus, and sundry others who showed up to share the experience with me for some interval. At Nuphy's urging, I caught the Men in Kilts show for the first, and it was a load of fun even if
treeplanter was robbed--ROBBED I SAY!--of his rightful place in the final three. The fix was in--how else to explain a manky Nova Scotian walking away with the grand prize?
We wisely avoided buying food at the fair apart from a few scones and I finally got the skinny on why the vendors are so disappointing. (Typical Chicago scam, I'm afraid.) Probably my only regret was missing the parade of pipers, but I couldn't stand to leave just as the cabre toss was in full swing. (They used the same extra large cabre they had at the Highland Games, but this time only two men managed to turn it.) Well, that and the fact that I wasn't able to take the pictures I needed to put together a proper page of lolscots.
