It seems like only a few days back I was looking at catalpas from the train, musing that they would be blooming soon, but not seeing any signs of budding. Today, walking to work, I noticed that the one of my street was already dropping blossoms. So I watched from the train and saw them blooming everywhere. How do things like this sneak up on me?

I was a total slug over the weekend, but I did get two daunting projects started: Scrubbing down my scary bathroom and planning the China trip with [livejournal.com profile] monshu. Next month will already be time to head to the consulate and apply for visas. GAA!! I have so much Chinese to learn before we leave unless I want to get totally pwned (or should I say "歐文ed"?) the first time I actually have to communicate with someone in Putonghua.

Another thing that snuck up on us was the Highland Games that we've been looking forward to since last year's Celtic Fest. Unfortunately, they're located inconveniently betwixt Metra lines, so our only possible route of approach (short of hijacking a vehicle along the driver to drive it) seems to be finding a cab in Hinsdale to take us the last three miles. Any tips on how to dress when you're a Mick-Kraut crossbreed like me?

Maybe y'all should look into a Zipcar. Does [livejournal.com profile] monshu have a driver's license?

The proper Mick/Kraut crossbreed is dressed in a kilt with suspenders (the ornate ones used to keep up lederhosen).

black watch tartan. A timeless classic, and easy to replicate with local materials.

Or the lederhosen, above. If you drink Jagermeister you can look like an authentic Dublin/Munich wino.

Okay, I give up. Which language is your subject line in?

You give up too easily! What one language do I write in that uses a combination of háčky, ogonki, and eðas?

(Also, does this mean that you didn't give up on this subject line?)

I'm not tackling your current subject. My wild stab at the previous one is "so where is the cold?" or similar (lit. "and cold... ..." - so I'm guessing the missing terms, and inferring that there's some -fix action going on with bejteri)

Bejteri is actually a borrowing of an Austrian German dialectal variant of Wetter "weather". The sentence is Roman (Burgenland Vend Romani) for "Where went the storm?" i.e. "Where did the storm go?"

Most modern Romani orthographies in Roman script take their cue from nearby Slavic languages.

How long will you be in China for? Do you have an itinerary yet? Let me know if you need any suggestions; I've spent four months on the road in China, so I know the place pretty well. :-)

We're looking at 2-3 weeks; Beijing, Xi'an, and Yangzi cruise (with possible end stops in Chongqing and/or Shanghai). Given that we might be interested in day trips but we really don't want to spread ourselves too thin, any suggestions?
