The cicadas are coming!
"I know that," you say, "but when?" Good question. The date's been pushed off more times than a Microsoft release. At Friday night's dinner, Nuphy said that the predicted warm weekend would finally break the camel's back. Sunday and Monday were (contrary to prediction) simply gorgeous--70s and sunny--and today and tomorrow are supposed to be in the 80s.
So where are they? I've been hearing rumours of emergence in the western suburbs, and I was in an eastern suburb over the weekend and didn't see any. It's not like I don't know what to listen or look for. In fact, it's not summer for me until I hear their metallic cries piercing the humid night air. But I have yet to see a single telltale hole in the ground or dessicated skin, much less an actual bug-eyed monster. No one I know has seen one either--they're as elusive as those tit clamps I told you about in my last post! (You did read my last post, didn't you?)

Also, they come out at dusk. I remember when they came out last time - I was out riding my bike with my brother and Mr. Hoeffer, our neighbor, motioned us over to see the bug crawling up the old tree in his yard.
The next morning the neighborhood was coated in bugs.
Last night I took a walk around my neighborhood (Lincoln Park) to see if I saw any cicadas crawling up the trees and saw nothing. Today's high is supposed to be 88, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if they come out this evening when the sun sets, although tomorrow's thunderstorm might loosen up the ground for them to emerge tomorrow night, too.
Either way, it'll be any day now.
