Sunday ham dinner

I'm stupider than I'd like to be today because my upstairs neighbour was having all the fun I didn't have. 'Nuff said about that.
Now for the fun I did have: For the first time in living memory, I actually had someone else besides
monshu over for dinner. A couple weeks back,
zompist and I had made tentative plans for this date. Around one on Sunday, I called him to find out what he and his wife wanted to do. She unfortunately had to work, but he was amenable to CTAing in from the PROP and hanging out.
Given that, I announced my intention to bake the ham I bought last week, lest it go bad in my fridge before I got every ounce of luscious meat off of it. I bought some turnips to roast alongside it (to confuse
monshu--I love to insist for months on end that I can't stand a certain food and then turn around and eat it in front of him) and rounded out the menu with rice and beans and green beans with shallot. Without any prompting,
monshu supplied white wine and
zompist, dessert.
The plan had been for Zomp to get there first so we could get the geektalk out of our system before boring
monshu to death with it, but this plan could not withstand Zomp's incredible time sense. He arrived several minutes after the Great White One and we preceded to bore Zomp to death with opera talk. After a bit, he and
monshu slid into the "What do you do?" exchange and, eventually, into a discussion of our common interests in science fiction.
The dessert was something called brigadeiros, from Zompist's Brazilian cookbook. They were half chocolate, half sweetened condensed milk, and all delicious. I couldn't believe we ate them all. I pressed the second-to-last one on
monshu as he made for the door (without doing the dishes, the rogue!). Zomp hung around for another two hours of political and comical discussion and left with my copy of Kyle Baker's Your are here.
All in all, a good evening.
monshu was buoyant and left with a new example for his upcoming class (and his suitcase, which I'd borrowed for my trip home over the holidays).
zompist practically had to be pushed out the door and left with a shiny comic and a handful from the Big Bag o' Weird Candies. And I'm left with several pounds of yummy baked ham in the fridge and freezer. What could be better?
