I have no idea.
Am I allowed to use Google?

How could I stop you?

Google will unscramble the letters, but that's not enough by itself to solve the puzzle.

Do we at least get a language hint?

OK - so the only thing I can think of is Pugliese. From the Italian region of Puglia?

Ah - Googling found this:

Seafood Bruschetta
Shrimp, scallops,& lobster, tossed with mushrooms, tomato
and pesto served over a slice of pulgeise: $11

From a restaurant menu in St. Louis. So it must be Pugliese bread! Right? Do I win?

You do! I owe you a slice of pan pugliese when I get back to Chicago.

Woohoo! But that would require you to find me between all the other crazy ladies in Uptown. Then again, if I see someone walking the streets holding a slice of Italian bread I'll know it's you.

Oh, someone got it already. BTW, you've spelled it two different ways. I think this latter version is correct.

Isn't this a variety of Italian regional cuisine? Perhaps it refers to something more specific, like a sauce...

Is it a word if it's mis-spelled?

When I first spotted it on the menu, I was bewildered. My first thought was That looks like a Bolognese dialect spelling of a word for "flea-ridden".

Shit! As my father is from Puglia and my parents are still living there I had it in my mind for some seconds. But than I thought "why should it be this?" and I decided to be wrong.
