How do you keep track of the lengths of the various months of the calendar year?

I clench my fist. Then start counting the lengths of the months. If the peak of my index finger is January, then the Valley will be February, the peak of my middle Finger will be March,.. and so on. When I get to the pinky peak I turn back, comfortably accomodating August. :-)

I've been using this as far back as my memory allows and I have no idea when/ how I learned it.

Ditto. My mother told me this trick, and it seems to work fine.

Ditto ditto, except I think it wasn't her mother who taught it to me.

Oh! I do that, but I make fists and do it with my knuckles. And, actually, when I get to August, I move to the first knuckle of the other hand.

i was taught that method (the knuckles one) at some point, but i can never remember where to start or what to do at the turnaround. so i just recite the rhyme. thirty days hath september, april, june, and november...

You can also do the knuckles one by putting your two fists next to each other. It's harder to count that way (unless you have a third hand), but it makes what to do at the turnaround easier, as there isn't one.

Thirty days hath September,
April, June, and November.
All the rest have thirty-one,
except for February, 'cause it's weird.

I just recite the rhyme to myself until I get to the appropriate month.

Me too. I never heard of the knuckles trick -- that might be useful to teach my firstborn.

Or maybe that's something you could have your firstborn teach you!

Though when I *do* think of the rhyme, it's "thirty days has", not "hath".
