Excerpt from an e-mail exchange between yours truly and Nuphy:
Da: Last night, I plugged in the air conditioner at last but still didn't turn it on....
Nuphy: There can be no doubt about it, you're certifiable!
I did come close to finally giving in yesterday, but I figured I could hold out one more day for cooler weather. The thing is, the little window unit takes forever to cool the place and requires me to run around closing all the windows. It just seems too much trouble unless I'm sure I'll be running it for days on end.

I did have some trouble falling asleep last night, what with it never dipping below 80° (27° C), so I pulled out my copy of Faulkner's Collected stories. Something about hot sticky weather always makes me want to read Faulkner; I would've taken one of his novels with me to Florida, but I couldn't decide which one. (Just as well; Joe Keenan probably made for better nighttime reading, all things considered.)

Who do like to read when it gets really, really hot?

And some of my friends wonder why I'm so paranoid about proofreading my posts and e-mails. They obviously have no idea what I'm up against.

Hot! Sweaty? Why only "Handjobs" will do at that point.

Books about Antarctic explorers! Or, alternatively, tales of the Amazon rainforest, which allows me to make comments like, "I'm sweating like crazy, but at least I don't have worms growing inside the skin of my feet."

I'm not sure. I'm still trying to slog through Ulysses. I'm on page 420 out of 650, and we're in some kind of fantasy dream-land of Leopold Bloom's. Which is OK. I like Bloom, but I can't stand young Stephen Dedalus, and keep hoping he gets killed (but I realize it's not that kind of book).
