When I was a child in the 40s, the Catalan language was forbidden. I realised that to have two languages and cultures is better than one; three better than two. You should always add, not subtract. I've tried to be a kind of European with a knowledge of other areas of the world. (Juan Goytisolo, in an interview with the Guardian, 12. Aug. 2000)

Indeed, you SHOULD add and not subtract, yet I get people who stare at me and go, "Why would you wanna learn that shit???" -_-;;;;

Goytisolo's case is a little special since his mother was Catalan but his father was of Basque origin, and it was the latter who insisted that he grow up speaking only Castilian. Although most middle-class Catalans learned the language at home despite the public ban, he didn't pick it up until his mid-30's when he was living in exile in France. He also speaks French, English, Turkish, and Maghrebi Arabic.
