The future is in the past

I've been seeing flyers around for a lecture on the future of labour organising. Many of them have the banner headline: "THE LABOR MOVEMENT: The People Who Brought You The Weekend". Everytime I see that, I think, "That was eighty years ago. So what have you done for me lately?"
I've worked very similar jobs at two different institutions. One position required me to join a union (well, I also had the option of not joining but paying dues anyway). One position offers better pay, better working conditions, better benefits, and greater job security than the other. No prizes for guessing which one of these is the union position.
