Last night, [livejournal.com profile] monshu and I met for drinks and dinner at Big Chicks and there was a new face behind the bar. I've only seen this young woman once or twice serving food and didn't realise she could bartend.

Turns out there's a good reason for that: She can't.

[livejournal.com profile] monshu ordered his regular: "scotch and water". The ensuing dialogue was something like this:

"You want that in a small glass." [gestures to indicate a shotglass]

*blink* "No, tall."

"Rocks?"

*blink* "Yeah, rocks."

(For those of you who don't drink or, at least, not in bars: Every other single time I've seen him order this drink in the nearly ten years we've been together, the only question from the bartender has been what kind of scotch he wants. Scotch and water is always served tall with rocks unless you explicitly specify otherwise.)

She turned to me and I said, "Hardcore". She smiled and asked, "Now what goes into a 'hardcore'?"

My turn to blink. "It's the brand of hard cider y'all serve here."

But the absolute pinnacle came while we were finishing our meals. We heard her call to the usual bartender, "Greg, can you come over and make a margarita?"

(For non-drinkers: This is the equivalent of a short-order chef saying, "Tony, can you come back here and make a reuben?" In other words, WTFF?)

I once ordered a seltzer at a hotel bar and got a tonic water (the kind with quinine).

That's nothin'. [livejournal.com profile] monshu once ordered a "scotch and soda" and got scotch and 7Up. Talk about nasty surprises! It's right up there with [livejournal.com profile] lhn's tequila sidecar!

In what state did that happen? Maybe the bartender thought he ordered a scotch and pop.

This was in St. Louis, where "pop" is "soda". The bartender told him that the default for "soda" is "white soda" (i.e. 7Up, Sprite, etc.). He asked me if this was true, but never having been to a regular bar back home, I really can't say.

i dig that bar!

i went when i visited in january. unfortunately, i'd chosen some uncomfortable (but very stylish!) boots to wear and was NOT up to dancing. *pout*

if i recall correctly (and my memories of that week are starting to fuzz already) we ended up wandering through a patio and into the neighboring bar to use the restroom. there was a supah-fly poster by COOP (http://www.coopstuff.com/) hanging on the wall. ok. randomness concluded.

Hmm, how odd. There is no "neighboring bar". The nearest bar to Big Chicks is like a half-mile away. And the COOP poster isn't ringing any bells--but, then again, I suspect we'd use different restrooms in any case.

fuzzy memory

as i said, that's only if i remember correctly...the poster could easily have been in one of the establishments i made my way to that evening down on halsted. :) it was a long day, and cold, and there was a significant trauma (http://thesilia.livejournal.com/2006/01/15/) earlier in the day. i ended up writing a lot about it, and even posting some. (http://thesilia.livejournal.com/2006/01/19/)

i would be in the ladies' room most days.

I like my scotch and water frozen, with salt on the rim.

And floating in a tinted bowl of liquid nitrogen, for maximum theatricality?

Was sind ein "short-order chef" und ein "reuben"?

Die sind das und das.

Was wären treffende deutsche Entsprechungen? "Imbisskoch" und "Currywurst"? Nein, das geht zu unnachsichtig ins Gesicht.
