A story goes that an aide walked into J.D. Rockefeller's office one morning and found the older gentleman bending over to pick up a penny off the floor. "Sir, you are the richest man in America, why are you bothering about a penny," the startled aide asked. "That penny is 1% interest on a dollar for a whole year for free," the magnate replied.

Plus, he wanted to stretch after driving another competitor out of business.

One of the columns we calculate in the Human Resources Data Warehouse is the pay per hour of every employee, whether they are an hourly rate employee or salaried. It's laughingly calculated off a 35/40 hour work week. And it comes in two flavors: what the university pays for the employee to work for an hour, and what the employee makes in that hour.

In a glance, it tells you how much money your time is worth. Salaried or not, you know what an hour of your time is worth. And how many hours of work it takes to equal the cost of paying for something.

It's not accurate, but it's a tool. And let me tell you, I look at some "saving money" tasks entirely differently now. An hour of my time to save $10? Yeah, forget that shit. Suddenly taking cabs can become just that much more palatable.

This is hilarious!!! That's almost precisely the method I use. Except, I think I stay awake at night a bit more for really good measure. :)
