What good can come out of Portage Park

Tonight was
bunj and e.'s Xmas Xtravaganza and it was a smashing success. I had figured
monshu would be itching to leave with an hour or two, but my friends actually managed to sustain conversations with below-average reference to role-playing games, DC comics, and the current cinema. That plus frequent smoking breaks was enough to keep him around for more than five hours--plus he left with a low-carb cookbook and a recommendation for a new novel to read. Cookbooks were the only books I got, revealing a not-so-subtle message from my friends. I really need to slap myself into action and have some of them over for hors-d'œuvres at least. Maybe this will be the year I finally make good on my promise to host them for North Chinatown New Year's Parade-viewing?
Discovery of the day: Coronado Rompope a.k.a. "Mexican egg nog". We were at local liquor warehouse Sam's because
monshu wanted an Alvear Pedro Ximénez sherry (a.k.a. "liquid raisin") to take to our hosts and I was inspired to seek out an advocaat or Eierlikör. Unfortunately, I was informed that their perfidious European suppliers had not fulfilled a single bottle of their orders and directed towards the Rumpope. My face must've registered exactly what you'd expect it to upon being presented with a bottle of liquor for less than $10 with a picture of a cow on it, because he urged, "Don't be surprised; it's really good." And so it was! Too bad the likelihood of my being able to track down a bottle in STL next week is low, but I shall try.
The meal, btw, was the typical trans-Atlantic hispanic banquet spread of tamales (de pollo, de puerco, y de rajas), manchego, prosciutto, salsa, baked brie, and so forth. And the sweets! The typical mind-blowing assortment de e. along with monkey bread, seven-layer cookies, a gingerbread house with a King Kong theme (featuring a gummy Dora the Explorer who was not long for this world), Ghiradelli squares, and--it's all a blur. e. urged us to eat more and I told her it was a good thing I'd clear my evening for rolling around on the ground with my hands clutching my distended belly.
