Dw i'n flin. Roeddwn i'n edrych ymlaen at wrando ar miwsig Cymreig gyda fy iPod "Minnie" neithiwr. Bron i wythnos roeddwn i'n aros i lawrlwytho a chwarae CD Ffa Coffi Pawb roeddwn i newydd prynu yn St. Louis erbyn i fi wneud hynny ddydd Sadwrn. Reit dda yw y caneuon! Gaeth amheuon ynglŷn ag ei rhagoroldeb ei chwalu nhw yn llwyr. Mae'r albwm fel ymwelwr o ddimensiwn arall oedd rhai o fy hoff bandiau'r 80au hwyr (Jesus & Mary Chain, Blur, etc.) yn canu yng Nghymraeg! O fy mlaen i oedd tro hirfaith gyda'r CTA i'r deau ond gyda Minnie basai braidd yn hyfryd.

Yr iPod 'na sy'n gorwedd ar fwrdd y [livejournal.com profile] monshu. Ers neithiwr mae hi'n gorwedd fan 'na.

Mae hi'n ffodus aeth [livejournal.com profile] lhn a [livejournal.com profile] prilicla gyda fi ran o ffordd adre. Beth o'r tro o leia doedd ddim yn flinderus.

Diddorol yn odiaeth mae gwrando ar gerdd Gymraeg! Ychydig yn seithug hefyd. Dw i'n teimlo trwy'r amser fel y dylwn i ddeall rhagor o'r testunau.

What are you doing relying on a computer programme anyway? Don't you have the Heini Gruffydd I gave you?

How do you like your Welsh butts? Rare or snow-done?

Definitely rare.

If that's what you like, why not a Caerphilly cheese steak then? It's not as big a draig to coch!

I have a renewed appreciation for Gary Larson's old "What Dogs Hear" Far Side. :-) While I was briefly buoyed by the discovery of an online Welsh translator, it seems less successful at giving the sense of a passage than similar services for other languages. (Assuming that the final two sentences don't actually translate as "He is being she heartburn fortunate he went [livejournal.com profile] lhn I go [livejournal.com profile] prilicla â I home he he shares. He shares the turn he y they sign he was anything wearisomely." If they do, then props to Intertran.)

You and I must've been on the same site. I'm very curious as to what Da meant by the word that kept getting translated as "heartburn."

(And, by association, whether the translation above is at all comprehensible.)

Assuming a word-for-word translation, it would correspond to "'n" in the original text, which is just a particle, so I don't know where the hell they get that. The rest is typical context-insensitive nonsense:

Mae hi'n ffodus
He-is-being she heartburn fortunate

Mae is just the usual word for "is"; there's no reason to translate it "he is being"--especially when the subject is right next to it and it is "she", not "he". (Yes, "she" is pronounced "he" in Welsh; those of you with a background in Hebrew shouldn't find this too confusing.) It also fills the role of "dummy subject" in Welsh, so the actual meaning of the sentence is "It is fortunate".

You could hardly find a simpler sentence to translate. If a programme chokes on that, it's not worth the floppy it's stored on.
