SSC: Firefox
I had to call for user support because Exploder spontaneously decided it was a stich to present certain web pages to me completely blank. There was no obvious common thread: All the pages seemed to have CJK characters, but many many more pages with them displayed fine. To top it off, the failures weren't 100% consistent either. That is, some pages never displayed whereas others usually did, but occasionally did. As luck would have it, the consistent failures included CJK dictionaries that were most useful for my work.
One of the first things the techie did was to suggest downloading Mozilla Firefox to see if it had the same problems. Knowing our institutions insanely restrictive security policies, I asked if he needed to log on as administrator. No, because the machines were set up to install Firefox without the need for those privileges. Why? Because it's supported software.
So the solution to my IE display problem turned out to be "Firefox". Who knew? (Well, actually, I suspected as much...)
All of this is prefatory though. What I've found is that I love the little mini-icons that Firefox displays on the Bookmarks menus so much that I systematically went through each and every bookmark in order to get them to display--and was disappointed each time one wasn't available. Oh, well; at least it allowed me to weed some dead links.
