Sorry not to have anything roadkillish to offer but i seek a word that probably doesn't exist in English and I couldn't find your e-mail. I'm seeking a term that means "self love without conceit". I'm willing to accept another language althoughI'm really hoping for somehting English seeing as it's my second language (I'm still looking for my first). If you'd rather answer this outside your journal you can e-mail me at Zenthony@aol.com. Thank you, treeplanter.
Aha, so you're the troublemaker! pleinweb posted your question in his journal and, so far, no one's been able to come up with an acceptable reply. I snidely suggested amour propre, but it occurs to me that this isn't a bad model. What do you think of "proper love"? Proper used to mean "own" (and still does in a few fixed expressions) and the current meaning of "appropriate" seems to subsume your notion of "without conceit".
Much thanks to my language mavens. Da, so far you get the prize for coming closest to what I want. I do find it interesting that our language doesn't seem to have felt the need to come up with a term for it. I have also been plying my psych clients (both "ologists" and "iatrists") they have no term for it either.
Oh ooh. What gay journalist commentator used to work for a newspaper in Detroit and commute back and forth to Chicago? On his road trips he used to stop to pick up roadkill for his film school trust fund baby friend which they would then deposit on doorsteps of those who had done them wrong, wrong, wrong!
