Book buying binge
On Saturday, in addition to buying film-festival tickets, I bought books. It's a pleasure I've been repressing for a while as I guiltily consider necessary home expenditures, but my jones finally got too strong to ignore. New acquisitions include:
monshu about the story "Shottle Bop" which I've loved ever since I first read it as an impressionable teen. I also bought him a short book on the development of Chinese script that he's been reading on the bus. I plunged right into the Riding, which I have a mixed opinion of so far. Despite the subtitle, it seems to be more political history than anything else, which is fine, since my knowledge of Mexican politics is appallingly limited; so far, his forays into cultural criticism are less than successful, being peppered with the kind of unconvincing overgeneralisations that are the bane of that genre.
- Perspectives on the Yi of Southwest China. Wu Gu [et al.]
- King, Gareth. Colloquial Welsh.
- Sturgeon, Theodore. Microcosmic God.
- Lenz, Siegfried. So zärtlich war Suleyken.
- Baedeker's Belgium.
- Riding, Alan. Distant neighbors : a portrait of the Mexicans.
