Non credo quia absurdum

I just spent two hours debating Christianity--and boy is my faith tired! Nice guys--a couple of pastoral students (M.Div.) from an evangelical institute up the road. They were educated, articulate, and patient. This made it the kind of conversation where you could casually toss out reference to the contradictions in Genesis or between the Old Testament and the New confident that they'd both know what you were talking about and wouldn't take offence.
I don't know that they were trying to convert me so much as figure out what they were up against and sharpen their skills. Over the course of the conversation, they ran through a wide variety of approaches and, in the end, said it was a very worthwhile conversation. I joked that they could include me in their prayers to convert the heathen and one of them reminded me that Saul had had the same attitude until he got his ass kicked on the road to Damascus. I responded that, if I did convert, I would be just the kind of unstoppable hardass that Paul became.
I would, too. I've done the Christianity thing before, so I know exactly the level of conviction I can bring to it. Partly, it's pure orneriness that makes me play up my commitment to atheism.
