The bed came ten minutes ahead of schedule. No forewarning, but that could be my fault, since I may not have given the prefix for my cell number. Fortunately, I had perfect connexions on the CTA and was home in plenty of time. Unfortunately, I had so much time that I picked up lunch, but it sat there getting cold while I waited for the deliverymen to finish up and get the hell out. The antique elevator was apparently a smidge too short for the boxes so they had to cut them open to get the mattress and box spring upstairs. Plus, the younger of the two seemed to be on his first day of work. Even worse, the big guy managed to have all the elements of a successful bear (big frame, big moustache, barrel chest, hairy arms, etc.) while failing to pull them together into a successful, attractive package. No tip for you!

How do I like it? Lemme think about it...
  1. Dang, it's high! The box spring must be thicker than the store model. After so long just off the floor, it's like I'm floating!
  2. If I position myself dead centre of the bed, I can look out my corner window and see nothing but trees and sky. Both the rest of my building and the 30+ story monstrosity next door are just barely out of view and I can pretend they don't exist while I watch the wind play in the bright green fronds of the honey locusts. I've spent a substantial chunk of the last fifteen hours doing just that.
  3. Wheel locks, sheel locks; I still woke up with the bed six inches away from the wall. Time to start looking for caster cups or move a rug into the room.
  4. I wish someone had warned me about the smell. Yes, I know it's all brand-new synthetic foam; what I didn't know is that lying on it for the first time is like sticking your head in a paint bucket.
  5. Despite warnings that it would sleep hot for the first couple months, it didn't seem at all bad. Then again, last night the temperature plunged into the lower 60s. Still, I woke up with the (laughably diminutive) quilt on me as I clutched the body pillow to my breast.
  6. I really wish I'd bought some new sheets--even some cheapies--rather than waiting to see what Mom might send me for my birthday. Not only do my shrunken, stained embarrassments appear nothing short of shabby on such a prominent piece, but they fit over it only with difficulty.
  7. In the end, there was no dramatic difference. I woke up four times, like I usually do. I changed positions. I fidgeted. Have I simply been sleeping on a crummy futon for so long that my body will need to readjust to a real mattress?

I bought some sheets from Overstock.com that seem like a good value of threadcount for the money, though the color was not quite what I thought it would be. If you have a queen bed instead of a full, they have much better selection.

Is this a Tempur-Pedic?

It is indeed. I was all set to go with a Serta imitator when I discovered that the price differential wasn't has fierce as I feared.

Do you have some experiences to share?

Oh, hell yes. My Tempur-Pedic is probably my most prized possession -- I've considered volunteering to do commercials for the company.

Seventeen hundred bucks (for king + boxsprings, three? years ago), and worth every penny to my back and shoulders.

Most likely. We upgraded from crummy spring bed to good spring bed, and it took a few nights to get used to the new feel, but my back was feeling better sooner.
