LJ has been acting retarded for me for most of the day. (For instance, I haven't been able to load my Friends page or even look at anyone else's journal for over an hour.) So I finally went to
lj_maintenance to see if there's a server down or something--and that page won't load either!
Some days, there's nothing to do but work.
Outside, it's gray and cool and raining. On a promising note, the sewer work beneath the street has started and some of the men are looking promising. One in particular, who gives off foreman vibes, has something of a Super Mario thing going on: Short, round, Southern European, moustachioed. He also looks spry enough to dodge rolling barrels, if not actually leap over them.
At lunch, I heard people at a nearby table making strange noises. They were saying things like "What about sher? We don't have enough of those." I finally asked them what the hell they were up to and the woman answered, "Oh, it's linguistics," in something of the embarrassed, confessional tone I've come to expect from gamers among mundanes. "We're coming up with stimuli. We have to think of English non-words. What about /đæf/? That's not an English word, is it?"

When last I looked, it said something about knowing the site would be slow and/or unresponsive, and they're "working on it." I can get it to work, but only through brute force of half a dozen page load attempts per page to find the couple of seconds when the site can actually talk to my computer.

I find that to be extremely hilarious.
