Separation of Church and State, European style!

It boggles me that Europeans complain about the "theocratic" leadership of the USA and yet tolerate something like this in their own backyard. But I suppose that, as an enforcement arm of the Vatican, the Italian gendarmerie are a lot less terrifying than the Swiss Guards.

Yeah but isn't the real issue that they bricked up the monk? That's not religious particularly, just plain hostage-taking.

Is that the real issue? The trouble with "Freak-of-the-Week" reporting is that it leaves out all kinds of important details. I'm assuming that the monk didn't want to go and bricking him up was a consensual form of protest, but we don't really know, do we? We don't even know why he's being recalled in the first place.
