Why the hell did I stay up and watch the Oscars last night? After all, I agree wholeheartedly with everything [livejournal.com profile] magdalene1 says today in her entry about it being a meaningless popularity contest. I could blame it all on [livejournal.com profile] monshu--he's the one who turned it on, after all. Perhaps because it's the only nominated film he's actually seen, he was rooting for LotR:RotK, but wasn't about to stay up half the night to see it win. I told him he could just check the news online first thing in the morning or I could keep watching and then come bouncing onto the bed to give him the good news. Why does life have to imitate my jests? As it gained momentum, I got caught up in the sweep and treaded the tedious bits (it helps that I hadn't seen any of the other nominated films either, so I had no strong feelings about who did and didn't "deserve" an award) in order to hear the entire population of New Zealand get thanked several times over and see the dapper cast flood the stage at the end.

In honour of that moment, a quiz as deep and meaningful as the Oscars themselves:

[Poll #256204]

Lastly, since we missed the red carpet, I'm reliant on all of you to give me an Oscar Night bad fashion rundown. [livejournal.com profile] monshu wants to know: Did anyone else have a ghasty humongous butt bow or was that an isolated Oprahfanity?

Renee Zellweger had a gigantic buttbow as well. The dress looked nice from the front, though. Kelly Lynch had back-and-butt bow running all up and down, though overall Uma beat her in the "stylin' from another planet" competition.

Indeed. What WAS that? A dress constructed of oversized military braiding? Of course, she rather looks like she's from another planet as it is.

There were lots of butt bows. For a fashion rundown, I point you at the Yahoo! news slideshow.

Somebody ([livejournal.com profile] lhn?) said "What is this, a wedding?"

Yes, and Sandra Bullock was the cake!

Especially considering that the other big trend was dresses with trains, some of which were even white. No veils, though, IIRC.

My favorite assessment came from Salon: "Not even the clothes were interesting, apart from Uma Thurman, who wore a Fabergé baked potato."
