Eat the moon!
Latest addition to the Rumtopf: 411 g of very ripe longans. We'd meant to add some back when they were in season but hadn't found any we thought were sweet enough. These were sweet, but had darkened and lost some of their juiciness, making them less fun to eat but pretty well suited to steeping in a pot full of sugared rum. To add them I had to remove the plate with which we'd been weighing down the fruit. For good measure, I washed it before setting it back in but not before licking it off first. OH MY GOD. I think when the time comes
monshu is going to have to physically restrain me from gulping down the whole crock. It is THAT GOOD.
If you were in Chicago around suppertime last night then you know that moon-viewing was pretty much a washout. So we compensated by loading the house with every kind of moon-shaped edible object we could find: Not only the longans and a traditional pomelo but pomegranates, tangerines, and a Rubenesque Asian pear. I think the last of these is going into the Rumtopf as well, after I add the peaches. (Only after brought them home for me did
monshu think to check whether they were freestone. Thoughtful guy!)
ETA: BOGUS! Mould on the peaches! Oh, well, at least there's no question whether they're ripe enough!
